Women candidates: gender, media and discourse relations

RESUMO Tendo como pano de fundo a sobreposição das presenças da mulher e do político nas candidaturas a cargos públicos, neste artigo discutimos o peso da mídia na influência sobre a escolha dos eleitores e a posição destes como intérpretes dessas mensagens midiáticas. Assumindo um entendimento que relativiza o poder da mídia, indicamos como a idéia de discurso de (e sobre) gênero pode ser compreendido como mediador dessa influência. Embora pesquisas indiquem que a presença da mulher na mídia como candidata, transformada em um produto de marketing, tendem a desqualificá-la, esses efeitos apenas acompanham o estereótipo da mulher restrita à cena privada, alimentado por um discurso social que identifica o lugar da mulher como sendo o lar, longe, portanto, do espaço público. A mídia, assim, além de sua responsabilidade pela instalação desse lugar de mulher, atua pela sua manutenção. Concluímos que a participação política das mulheres se apresenta intimamente ligada a como elas são representadas no senso comum, indicando que uma mudança da participação política feminina passaria pela mudança nos discursos hegemônicos sobre as mulheres, discursos esses que atravessam os indivíduos e os grupos sociais.

ABSTRACT On this paper we discuss, within the cross over of two representations - woman and politic function - the media's power to influence voters' choices and their roles as interpreters of media messages. Under a position that understands the relativity of the media's power, we set the idea of gender discourse as a mediator of its influence. Whereas literature shows how a candidate suffers an important effect of media exposition, transformed in a marketing product, we suggest that women in politics suffer from the stereotype that states "women's place is at home". We conclude that women politic participation is strongly linked to the way in which they are represented in the common sense and a change in the hegemonic discourses about women that cross individuals and social groups becomes necessary as to have this situation modified

Regional differences and women's relative success at municipal elections in Brazil

RESUMO Por que, nas eleições locais brasileiras, as mulheres apresentam um desempenho melhor nas regiões economicamente menos desenvolvidas? O artigo testa três possíveis respostas, eventualmente sugeridas nos debates sobre a questão: 1) a associação das candidatas dessas regiões com partidos de direita; 2) o gap educacional que as beneficia; e 3) a maior presença de mulheres no eleitorado. A análise dos dados, entretanto, leva à rejeição de todas essas hipóteses, concluindo-se que são necessárias explicações mais complexas para o fenômeno. Os dados permitem, também, observar as limitações da legislação brasileira de cotas eleitorais para mulheres.

Why do women have a better performance in the less economically developed regions at Brazil's local elections? The article tests three possible answers, sometimes suggested in the debates about the question: 1) the association of female candidates with right-wing parties in those regions, 2) the educational gap, which is beneficial to the women, and 3) the greater proportion of women among the electorate. Nevertheless, data analysis says that all the hypotheses must be rejected. We concluded that more complex explanations are needed, in order to understand this phenomenon. The data also show the limitations of the Brazilian law which created electoral quotas for women

Body and flesh: a reading of Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos and Vida de Santa Oria from the gender category perspective

Baseado na proposição do pós-estruturalismo, adotada por Joan Scott, de que "os significados não são fixos no léxico de uma cultura", o presente artigo tem como objetivo discutir, usando a categoria de gênero, os significados de duas palavras espanholas medievais - cuerpo e carne - em textos hagiográficos que foram escritos por Gonzalo de Berceo na primeira a metade do século XIII, Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos e Vida de Santa Oria. Queremos verificar, procurando ambigüidades e conflitos, como a categoria gênero é articulada às concepções de Berceo sobre o corpo e a carne.

Based on post-structuralism's proposition, adopted by Scott, that "meanings are not fixed in a culture's lexicon", the present article aims to discuss the meanings of two medieval Spanish words - cuerpo and carne - in hagiographic texts written by Gonzalo of Berceo in the first half of the century XIII, Vida de Santo Domingo de Silos and Vida de Santa Oria, from the gender category perspective. We want to verify as this category is articulated to Berceo's conceptions about the body and the flesh, looking for ambiguities and conflicts.

Domestic violence and Special Criminal Courts: analysis from the legal feminism and penal criticism perspectives

This article aims at demonstrating the possibility of criticism about the criminal law (Lei 9.099/95) from two perspectives seen as marginal within penal law studies: the legal feminism and the penal criticism (garantismo). Taking into account the victim's condition and the defendant's rights during the criminal proceedings, such discourses are linked to show the inefficacy of that law towards both the victim and the defendant

Nursing and genetics: a feminist critique moves us towards transdisciplinary teams

A informação genética e as tecnologias são cada vez mais importantes no cuidado em saúde, não somente nos países desenvolvidos, mas no mundo todo. Vários fatores globais prometem aumentar a futura demanda para pesquisa e serviços de saúde em genética moralmente conscientes. Embora os enfermeiros sejam o maior grupo profissional, prestando cuidado de saúde no mundo todo, eles não tomaram a liderança rumo a esse desafio. Insights, a partir da análise feminista, ajudam a esclarecer algumas das relações sociais e dos obstáculos culturais que têm impedido a integração da tecnologia genética na área da enfermagem. Um modelo alternativo é sugerido - o modelo transdisciplinar -, o qual foi desenvolvido inicialmente por uma enfermeira e introduzido, na década de 1970, na prestação do cuidado em saúde e no serviço social para crianças com déficit de desenvolvimento. Esse modelo holístico permite que todo profissional de saúde tenha a mesma voz ao determinar como o cuidado de saúde em genética será globalizado

ABSTRACT Genetic information and technologies are increasingly important in health care, not only in technologically advanced countries, but world-wide. Several global factors promise to increase future demand for morally conscious genetic health services and research. Although they are the largest professional group delivering health care world-wide, nurses have not taken the lead in meeting this challenge. Insights from feminist analysis help to illuminate some of the social institutions and cultural obstacles that have impeded the integration of genetics technology into the discipline of nursing. An alternative model is suggested - the transdisciplinary model - which was developed initially by a nurse and introduced in the 1970s into the delivery of health care and social services for children with developmental disabilities. This holistic model enables all health care professionals to have an equal voice in determining how genetic health care will be globalized.

Remarks on the politics of desire: trying to think beyond compulsory instincts

O texto procura articular uma maneira feminista e holista de pensar a relação entre natureza e desejos. Tento considerar nossos desejos em relação ao nosso corpo e a como ele responde às forças nas nossas subjetividades, às pessoas a nossa volta e à história da nossa espécie. Começo considerando a distinção entre o político e o pessoal e daí faço algumas observações sobre a natureza e as três ecologias imbricadas uma na outra como diagnosticou Guattari. Proponho que entendamos o corpo como a confluência dessas ecologias e, ao mesmo tempo, como sendo ele mesmo nossa plataforma política. Proponho, então, um modelo acerca de como a natureza molda e restringe nossos desejos de um modo que não nos impõe nenhuma mensagem específica. Reflito, assim, sobre nossos instintos e como eles se inscrevem na política de nossa espécie - e como eles podem ser transformados, uma vez que não são mais naturais que os demais itens da nossa paisagem subjetiva. Essa transformação, eu argumento, deve ser pensada em termos de uma politização ecológica.

ABSTRACT This work attempts to articulate a feminist and holist account of our desires and their relation to nature. I consider desires in relation to our bodies, the environment around them and how they respond to the forces within our subjectivities, to society around us and to the evolutionary history of our species. I start out considering the separation of the personal and the political and then move on to make some remarks about nature and the three intertwined ecologies described by Guattari. I suggest that we understand the body as a meeting point for those ecologies and, at the same time, as constituting itself a political platform. I then offer a model of how nature constrains and shape our desire so that no specific message is drawn by our desires from nature. It follows that our desires can be changed as they are not in any sense more natural than the rest of our subjectivity. This change, I claim, is to be thought of in terms of an ecological politics

An issue of sexual citizenship: accessing same-sex marriage in Brazil

A instituição do casamento deve estar acessível a todos os cidadãos, independentemente de sua orientação sexual, sob pena de discriminação vedada na Constituição Federal. Contribui para essa conclusão a jurisprudência que, utilizando-se da analogia, tem reconhecido uniões estáveis entre pessoas do mesmo sexo sem que para isso seja obstáculo o fato de a Constituição prever que a união estável se dê "entre o homem e a mulher". Essa interpretação deve ser ampliada para o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo. É importante compreender que não se trata de alcançar um novo direito a gays e lésbicas, mas apenas assegurar-lhes o direito que já possuem: de não serem discriminados. Sustentar a necessidade de uma lei para regular o casamento gay é ignorar que a regulação do casamento deve ser uma só, sob pena de discriminação, porque é injustificado tratamento distinto para casais homossexuais.

The institution of marriage must be available to all citizens, irrespective of their sexual orientation, otherwise we have a case of discrimination, forbidden by the Constitution. Jurisprudence in Brazil has used analogy to recognize stable unions between same sex couples, even if the Constitution foresees stable unions as being "between a man and a woman." Such legal interpretation must be widened, ensuring same-sex marriage. From the juridical viewpoint then, it is a matter of securing a right that gays and lesbians already have, the right to be accepted and not suffer discrimination. It is not a matter of creating a new, specific, 'gay' or 'lesbian' right. Those who claim the need for a specific law regulating same-sex marriage seem to ignore the fact that the regulation of heterosexual and homosexual marriage must be rigorously the same in both cases.

(Anti)homosexual familism and citizenship regulation in Brazil

Pouco mais de dez anos depois da apresentação do projeto de lei que institui a parceria civil entre pessoas do mesmo sexo, neste artigo são reunidas reflexões, no âmbito do debate teórico e político, sobre as relações afetivo-sexuais entre homossexuais como uma expressão da diversidade da instituição social família. O ponto de partida é que o vazio jurídico relativo aos direitos conjugais e parentais de gays e lésbicas é uma expressa negação de sua condição de cidadãos. Procura-se mostrar que a vivência de relacionamentos amorosos e sexuais, algo que nos faz intrinsecamente humanos, ainda é, em termos legais, uma prerrogativa heterocêntrica, marca da injustiça erótica e da opressão sexual que atinge gays e lésbicas no Brasil e na maior parte do planeta.

Ten years after the presentation of the project of law that institutes the civil partnership between same-sex people, this article is a collection of reflections about the theoretical and political debate regarding relationships between homosexuals as an expression of diversity of family institution. The lack of legal rights for gay and lesbian partners and parents is an explicit denial of their citizenship. It will be shown that amorous and sexual relationships, that make us intrinsically humans, is still, in legal terms, a heterocentric possibility, which is an expression of the erotic injustice and sexual oppression that affect gays and lesbians in Brazil and most of the world

Homo-afetividade e direitos humanos: Homoaffectivity and human rights

A união civil entre pessoas do mesmo sexo é analisada neste ensaio discutindo-se as raízes do preconceito anti-homossexual e a luta pela cidadania de Gays, Lésbicas e Transgêneros no Brasil, elencando-se as diferentes manifestações da homofobia em nosso meio social. Desconstruímos, a seguir, as opiniões contrárias ao casamento homossexual, argumentando com evidências etho-históricas a justeza de se estender direitos iguais aos casais do mesmo sexo, inclusive o reconhecimento legal da união civil.

The civil union between persons of the same sex is analyzed in this essay through the discussion of the roots of the anti-homosexual prejudice and the fight for the citizenship of gays, lesbians and transgenders in Brazil, and through listing the different manifestations of homofobia in our social environment. We deconstruct the contrary opinions against the homosexual marriage, justifying with etho-historical evidences the extending of equal rights to the couples of the same sex, including the legal recognition of the civil union.

Three weddings and some reflection: notes on conjugality involving prostitute transvestites

A partir de uma abordagem antropológica que dialoga com a teoria queer, analisam-se três experiências de conjugalidade envolvendo travestis que se prostituem, discutindo-se os limites dessas relações, impostos pela visão de mundo que orienta as travestis, pessoas pertencentes em sua maioria às camadas populares e, de acordo com a hipótese que se coloca, tributárias de uma visão de mundo holista. Assim, observa-se que as relações conjugais vêm fortemente orientadas por perspectivas essencialista quanto ao sexo e ao gênero, atribuindo papéis rigidamente estabelecidos para cada parceiro. Ao naturalizar o sexo que exige um gênero supostamente coerente a essa anatomia que elas simplesmente não aceitam como destino, mantêm-se atadas à matriz heteronormatizadora. Informadas por uma gramática de conjugalidade heterossexual, elas encontram dificuldades em elaborar um outro léxico para as relações conjugais

Starting from an anthropological approach which dialogues with the queer theory, we analyze here three conjugal experiences involving prostitute transvestites. We are going to discuss the limits of those relationships, imposed by the world view that guides the transvestites, people that generally belong to the popular social layers and, in accordance to the hypothesis placed here, are tributary of a holist world view. Thus, we observe that the matrimonial relationships are strongly guided by essentialist interpretations in regard to sex and gender, assigning rigid established roles for each partner. When naturalizing sex which demands a gender supposedly coherent to that anatomy they simply do not accept as destiny, transvestites stay tied to the heteronormative matrix. Informed by a heterosexual matrimonial grammar, they find it difficult to elaborate another lexicon for the matrimonial relationships.

"A family of women: an ethnographic proposal on homoparenting in the periphery of São Paulo, Brazil

No presente artigo,1 buscarei refletir sobre uma família recomposta homoparental feminina da periferia da cidade de São Paulo, no que concerne à conjugalidade, ao relacionamento com as filhas, com a família extensa e com o ex-marido. Analisam-se possíveis variáveis que influenciam na forma como a lesbianidade é tratada e vivida e como diferentes posições relativas à questão podem levar a distintos arranjos familiares. No caso enfocado, a vivência de uma militância política e a concepção de lesbianidade como "condição" levam a uma publicização da mesma que terá repercussões na configuração dessa família. Por fim, partindo de uma consideração acerca dos dados etnográficos pesquisados, repenso a própria noção de lesbianidade e de pluriparentalidade

This article aims to propose a reflection on conjugality in its relationship with parenting, extended family and ex-husbands in a recomposed female homoparental family, from the periphery of São Paulo. Possible variables that influence the manner in which lesbianism is dealt with and experienced will be analyzed, as well as how different positions relating to this question can result in distinct family arrangements. In the case studied the experience of political activism and the conception of lesbianism as a "condition" result in a form of publicity, which has repercussions in the configuration of the family. Finally, beginning with a contemplation of the ethnographic data, the very concept of lesbianism and plural parenting will be reconsidered.
