The aim of the program under study was to help students to make more rational career choices. Such programs are becoming increasingly common among elementary and secondary schools. Two-hundred and ninety eight-grade students from two similar schools in São Paulo were randomly assigned to two different conditions. In the experimental treatment, students attended a series of lectures and read brooklets with information about 16 different careers. The program lasted for 11 weeks. Students were from low or middle SES, and their ages ranged from 14 to 19. Results showed significant gains in knowledge about careers, with a broadening of the hierarchies of occupational preferences and expectancies. However career choices did not present significant differences.
