This study intended to analyse different factors that could explain school failure in the 1st grade. It is an in depth study done in two public schools - one of them with lack of resources and serving a low SES population, and the other one with better resources and working with a higher SES population. Data were collected on students (throughmedical examinations and psychological testing), their families, teachers, supervisors and principals (through interviews and observation). The main conclusion was that school failure cannot be attributed to one or another isolated factor. It seems that public school is not prepared to work with low SES students and does not seem to have intentions of preparing itself to do so. What school has been doing is to structure itself to teach an ideal child who is rarely, or never, present in its classrooms.
