Abstract

The essay addresses the present-day "crisis" in educational research and points out the absence of a criterion, specific to education, for the selection of problems to be studied, the inappropriate methodology more frequently employed and the recommendations. Historically speaking, we got to this point out of an ambitious hope, yet unrealistic,to make of education a "positive science", only forgetting that in human affairs nothing is "positive" - except for the fact that it is through life-as-experienced that each of us constructs and transforms our own experiences, thus also transforming the social reality we all share and where all human learning begins and ends. Nine themes are discussed through questions and answers; the last question speaks to the re-orientation of educational research by making a series of propositions. The essay is informative in style but embodies a pedagogical feature as well, for it intends to involve the reader in a dialogical or dialectical learning process; it makes an invitation to critical thinking, which is a necessary posture for one to take toward research, today more than ever, in the context of Brazilian education.
