Brazilian educational literature based in Piaget's theory presents two different trends about cognitive characteristics of working class children. This article contains summary of basic conceptions about children capacities developed in two research centers that adopt Piaget theory. Somequestions are put together to stimulate a debate betweenopposing researchers, in order to make some advances in the knowledge about brazilian children that attend public schools.
