Abstract

The article discusses how young children are defined as a pedagogical object in our society and which social roles pre-school may fulfil when based in this conception. The authors analyse data about the increment of young children school attendance; changes in the pedagogical role of mothers, related to their new professional roles; evolution of day care needs in comparison with educational needs; psychology's new conceptions about young children development and changes in educational institutions available for young children. In the second part the article examines various aspects of pre-school institutions and the different expectations each social class has about them.
