The article discusses what should be the main objectives of pre-school programs for 4 to 6 years old children. The author values the kinds of programs that have well defined educational goals and qualified teachers, and she criticizes some programs that follow assistencial conceptions, as PROFIC does (a recent program proposed by the State Government of São Paulo). She also argues that children should enter elementary school an year earlier than they do now (at 6 years of age instead of 7), and that priority should be given to the education of children between 0 and 10 years of age.
