Abstract

BRUSCHINI, Cristina. Estrutura familiar e trabalho na grande São Paulo. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1990, n.72, pp.39-57. ISSN 0100-1574.

The article describes the changes in Brazilian, especially São Paulo's families according to since 1960. Based on 1981 data collected by inter-union agency DIEESE (independent from official census data collectors) it describes the family living in Great São Paulo as predominantly nuclear, young, with children under 7 and having 4.1 members in average. The analysis of member's participation in economic activity - using DIEESE's concept of biqueiros, workers performing informal sporadic and diversified services - shows that their position in the household partially determines the nature of activity to be engaged in. The study of individual activity rates, in turn, shows significant differences in their levels of economic participation bearing on the family structure to which they belong and on the moment of family life cycle they are in.
