This article reports an investigation on the relationship between phonological awareness and learning to write in Portuguese, taking as subjects two groups of low strata children learning to read and write through different methods: 32 through a phonic method and 26 through a syllabic method. The results of the present study confirm the resultsof previous investigations. In general, phonological awareness was related to progress in learning to read and write. However, the results of the present study suggest that variations in phonetic awareness, observed at the beginning of literacy acquisiton, may be less important for Portuguese literacy acquisition when children learn to read through a "syllabic" method than when they learn to read through a "phonic" method.
