Abstract

A review of recent literature on Brazilian urban social movements for education reveals several aspects of these mobilizations that lead to challenging a current view that disqualifies people's claims. It is shown that such claims often include issues related to the quality of the schooling that reaches poor neighborhoods in Brazilian cities. It is argued that, along with some weaknesses found in these grassroots, it is the school system's extreme rigidity and centralism that hampers further development of the groups who strugle for better schooling for all
