Technology in itself, or the introduction of new technologies, can not be taken as independent variables that would bring about changes in employment and labour. By drawing on exemples from Brazilian industries (automobile, metal-mechanic and microelectronic sectors), this article analyzes the impact of new technology on to work and required professional skills, showing how the impact may vary according to the organizational and political strategies adopted by the enterprises, as well as how they affect differently women and men in industry.
