Abstract

MONTOYA, Adrián Oscar Dongo. On the genetic roots of thought and language: Vygotsky and Piaget. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1995, n.92, pp.26-37. ISSN 0100-1574.

In this article we analyse Vygotsky's and Piaget's research and ideas on the psychogenesis of throught and language. The approach adopted is both epistemological and genetic. The specific topics studied are: 1) the roots of first-word meaning; 2) the role of language in the formation of cognitive structures; 3) the figurative and operative mechanisms in the development of conceptual thinking. The results of our study show that the theoretical differences between the authors are not based only on the relative importance attributed to social environment. The differences are based on diferent epistemological concepts which underlie the explanation of psychological processes and mechanisms that form cognitive instruments.
