Abstract

BIZZO, Nelio Marco Vincenzo. Eugenics: by want of biology. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1995, n.92, pp.38-52. ISSN 0100-1574.

Based on the debate caused by the publication of The Bell Curve in the United States, this article presents a rundown on the preachings of eugenics. It goes back to the early pronouncements, beginning with Francis Galton and his Darwinian presuppositions, and attempts to show the contextof the establishment of the ideas of "race improvement". In England, this meant, primarily, discrimination against the poor, but did not involve the color of the skin. In Brazil, eugenic thought may be found in its literature of the beginning of this century. The stage for its implementation was education.
