Abstract

AFONSO, Lúcia. A very feminine world: gender and the socializing process in community child care centers. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1995, n.93, pp.12-21. ISSN 0100-1574.

This paper presents the results of a research on differences in the socialization of girls and boys at day care centers in Belo Horizonte and Contagem in the state of Minas Gerais. The analysis focuses on (a) the relations between educators and children, (b) the educators' concepts of masculine, feminine and family, (c) how educators deal withchildren´s sexuality. Expanding into sexual, racial, family-type and class discrimination, the author argues that the stigmatizing process at child care community centers can be understood as a process of self-stigmatization among a population that presents different types of family organization that is predominantly feminine, poor and racially diversified.
