Abstract

GARCIA, Maria Manuela Alves. The field of symbolic productions, in particular, the scientific field of Pierre Bourdieu. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1996, n.97, pp.64-72. ISSN 0100-1574.

This article is about Pierre Bourdieu's sociological concepts of field, habitus and strategies, employed by him to analyse the structure and functioning of the fields of cultural and symbolical productions. The article intends to explore the implications of these ideas in the analysis ofcertain fields or academic/scientific subjects. It discusses the structure and functioning of the scientific field in Bourdieu where, in an apparent paradox, the advances of science are the result of a struggle between positions and agents over a specific kind of symbolic capital: authority scientific and scientific legitimacy. To illustrate both the hierarchied that form the scientific field and Bourdieu's analytical procedures, aspects are shown of two studies that demonstrate the application of these categories to well-delimited phenomena and events. These studies are: an analysis of the french university field accomplished by Bourdieu himself in this work Homo Academicus, and an analysis of the field of social sciences in Brazil in the 80's, effected by Monique de Saint Martin
