From the perspective that knowledge is a public good capable to sustain the development of a society, the objective of this study is to analyze the evolution of graduate programs (doctorate, master and professional master) in Brazil. The study utilizes the GeoCAPES database from 1998 to 2011. Within this series, it is possible to not only verify the development of the programs, but also to compare basic indicators, such as number of programs, teaching staff, students enrolled and titled at the national and regional levels. As an exploratory study, it uses descriptive statistical analysis presented through tables and figures, indicating some theoretical propositions for future research. The conclusions show a positive quantitative development over the thirteen years of the studied indicators. Although all types of programs have grown over the years, particularly the professional degree programs, two distinctive characteristics deserve attention: the uneven regional distribution concentrated in the richest regions is reducing, and the rapid growth of private universities at this level of education.
