Abstract

SILVA, Elidiane Martins de Brito da  and  LACERDA, Léia Teixeira. Memories of old chiquitanos: gender identity and children’s games. Rev. Reflex [online]. 2022, vol.30, n.3, pp.231-246.  Epub July 03, 2023. ISSN 1982-9949.  https://doi.org/10.17058/rea.v30i3.16731.

This article presents reflections on the social function of playing in the construction of gender identity based on the memories of old Chiquitanos. Those actors narrate their childhood games, showing how gender relations were constituted in a historical context marked by traditional knowledge of their group. In Chiquitana culture, gender relations are processed according to cultural codes and a cosmology equally applied to man and woman. Thus, children’s games were spontaneous, flexible and without gender stereotypes. Boys and girls played together and made their toys with materials found in nature.

Keywords : Gender identity; Indigenous children’s games; Chiquitanos; Elders’ memories.
