Abstract

DA SILVA AMORIM MENDES FRANCISCO, Gildete et al. New terms in Libras for health and biosafety areas. Rev. Educ. Espec. [online]. 2023, vol.36, e71042.  Epub Nov 23, 2023. ISSN 1984-686X.  https://doi.org/10.5902/1984686x71042.

The Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) has few specific terms in the fields of Biotechnology and Science. In addition, there are barriers to communication and dissemination of most of the signals in the areas of health and biosecurity, as well as the new signals that emerged during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The methodology used was based on an initial exploratory research on existing materials in Libras in the area of terminology. In this context, the present research aimed to present one of the products developed in the author's doctoral thesis - 2D multilingual illustrated glossary - material that is of great relevance to the Deaf Community. Thus, from the studies and surveys carried out to identify the most used term signs in laboratory and research environments, 98 term signs were selected as a fundamental step for the elaboration of the terminological sheets that make up the aforementioned glossary. The tool developed in this research demonstrates great relevance for the scientific and academic environment, especially for the Deaf Community, contributing to the dissemination of current content with potential risk to the health and safety of people, increasingly present in the daily life of society.
