Abstract: Young people are increasingly present in Adult Education and Training Centres (CFA) in Catalonia. The structural changes that for decades have been taking place in society have generated new inequalities requiring young people to return to study to gain accreditation for their skills in order for them to improve their employment opportunities and social inclusion. However, the high drop out rates in adult education centres brings into doubt whether such adult schools really offer young people a second chance. This article visits the origins and evolution of adult education in Catalonia to highlight the role of teachers, to note changes and to make suggestions for alternative educational responses designed with greater awareness of the profile of the young students.
