This article aims to present and discuss the pedagogical praxis of José Carlos Mariátegui (1894-1930) as one of the sources of Latin American popular education. Methodologically, the study featured qualitative research developed using bibliographic and documental research techniques, relying on direct and indirect sources around the Peruvian intellectual complete works. Our study evidenced Mariátegui’s pedagogical praxis as one of Latin American popular education sources through his educational efforts in González Prada Popular Universities. Our paper show how Mariátegui’s pedagogy can be a source of political, social, and revolutionary awareness from an educational perspective for the popular class. The popular education of Mariátegui pointed to a powerful formative process, which is based on the horizontal relationship between subjects who learn through the exchange of knowledge, considering the real circumstances in which people live. Mariateguian pedagogical praxis revealed the importance of the integral popular education project considering autonomy and cultural identity formation, dynamizing the spaces for meetings, and collective self-training aimed at the working class. A pedagogical praxis, which is anchored in dialogue and thinking, raises knowledge contradictions and develops new knowledge, potentiating formative and collective spaces construction and liberating practices, propelling a popular education alternative to the hegemonic models, critical of colonialism, Eurocentric logics, and bureaucratizing processes. We have concluded We conclude that Mariateguian popular pedagogy contributes to the strengthening and expansion of systematization processes of popular education historical sources in Latin America.
