It texts considerations that demarcate rural education, in the historical and conceptual dimensions, in Brazil from two approaches, namely: (i.) rural education can be conceived as an educational movement (the Rural Education Movement), carried out by different organizations and movements rural social areas, and (ii.) as an educational modality, with specific characteristics, such as education at the State level, built with the active participation of rural subjects. It is understood that, in general, Paulo Freire's thought was made as a constituent part of its materialization. In the text, dialogue, awareness, contextualization and human formation are discussed as principles of Freire's work that inspire, on a theoretical-practical level, rural education, whether at school or outside it.
