This article presents analyzes that seek to understand how the municipality of Piracicaba stood out in the educational area of the province/state of São Paulo, during the transition from the Empire to the Republic (1880-1910). The Pedagogical Municipality category is the historiographical basis. Documentary sources are national, provincial/state and municipal. The results reveal that in the province/state of São Paulo municipal councils were held responsible for numerous actions that were a provincial/state obligation. Piracicaba, in addition to fulfilling these obligations, developed its own initiatives and supported educational offers from different sectors of society. This process, permeated by republican ideals, mobilized local politicians, individuals and educators.
Keywords : pedagogical municipality; educational actions; Empire-Republic; local and regional power.
