The school size, as an ecological variable related to the force system - attractions and pressures or own forces and foreign forces - of the school as a whole acting upon each student is focused in the present study. The objective was to observe the influence of the school size and alsoof the school functioning period over the participation, and forces toward participation, in a voluntary extra-class activity, in a sample of 203 students from 7th and 8th grades of elementary state schools of São Paulo State. The Ecological Psychology approach, of Barker and others, was applied. The main results showed students from the small schools to participate more and to undergo more pressures to participate in a voluntary behavior setting than students from big schools; on the other hand, students from the night period evidence more attractions toward such activity than students from day period
