Abstract

GOUVEIA, Aparecida Joly. Origem social, escolaridade e ocupação. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1980, n.32, pp.3-30. ISSN 0100-1574.

Data from the 1973 Labor Force Survey (PNAD) are used to investigate the relationship between social origin, education and occupation in two unequally developed regions in Brazil, namely, São Paulo and the Northeast. Although levels of schooling are higher in São Paulo, a same pattern of social related educational unequalities prevails in the two regions. As expected, occupational positions is related to educational level, but the "effect" of education is not independent of social origin. Being a woman is not detrimental to the extent of schooling, but, even when controlled for education, women's positions tend to be lower than men's.

Keywords : Meio social; Escolarização; Ocupação; Região Nordeste; São Paulo.
