The main objetive of this paper is the analysis of how college students, from different social classes, perceive and incorporate, to their work life project and to the university itself, the changes that have been occurring in Brazil regarding the forms of recruitment to the labor force and its hierarchy. A questionary with open questions was administered to students that in the first half of 1974 were attending the basic program of the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. The main emphasis of the discourse produced by the students, with nuances according to their social classes, was the idea that the acquisition of certain competencies define the access to objects that indicate certain social positions. The role of personal gifts and merits is present, indicated as dependent not only of individual effort but also of its legitimation by an educational institution that provides the highest levels of schooling.
