The objective of this work is the analysis of utilization of teaching capacity at São Paulo University. A concept of effective average size of class is developed in this work. Comparisons of average class size with effective average class size is the basis for the analysis of utilization of the installed teaching capacity of USP. These comparisons are done for all the departments and schools of the University. It is possible to verify that teaching load is very unequaly distributed within USP; some departments and schools have very heavy teaching loads while others present all evidences consistent with excess capacity. Possible reasons for this situation are suggested and discussed.
