Abstract

This article attempts to analyse the role of the marriage in the paulista society during the nineteenth century. Based on data collected on maniscript census, wills and series of documents related to the period, we intend to discuss the wedding arrangements and its respectives criteria of selection in order to find reasons to the low rate of nupciality found among the different social groups in this society. Special attention was dedicated in the end of this paper to the socialization process, regulator agent of principle authority and different obligations between husband and wife in the marriage.
