Abstract

This article deals with Mannheim's views on planning and education aiming to call attention to underlying social dimensions of governmental plans in nowadays Brazil. It stresses the author clear understanding of the political nature of both processes and the capital role he assigned to education in the construction of a planned social order. Itshows that these ideas derived from Mannheim's acute sense of historical moment he was living, from a broad academic background commanded by his interest in the sociology of knowledge, and from his moral compromise with the defense of democracy. Criticism of his positions is centered in their methodological ambiguities as well as in Mannheim's incapacibility to see the decisive contribution of conflict to social change.
