Abstract

GOMES, Candido Alberto da Costa. Modelos de mobilidade social no Brasil: educação acadêmica e profissionalizante em perspectiva histórica. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1982, n.40, pp.23-33. ISSN 0100-1574.

The Brazilian educational system has changed from the sponsored to the contest social mobility model. A crucial difference between those models in the early or late specialization of curricula. However, comparative studies on Britain and the United States, besides some evidences on Brazil, do not support that the contest model is fairer than the sponsored one. As a result, the effects of curricula differentiation as a means of social selection can be questioned. The role of curricula alone may not be so influential unless they are associated to powerful factors of the social context. Alternatives to the issues of equality of educational opportunity and preparation for work are discussed.
