The present article describes physical and historical characteristics of a school located in the outskirts of São Paulo, analysing it in a broader social context and in the context of the public school in São Paulo in the last decade. The author discusses data referent to students’ school performance, identifying intra-school factors (institutional, organizational and human) related to it. Not underestimating the importance of the political questions involved, the author suggests studies on the daily life within schools in order to propose efficient changes at the internal level.
