Adopting a theorical orientation that postulates that education is a practice established in the context of social class relationships, the article poses some questions about the professional education of rural workers. The research was developed in the sugar cane region of Campos, state of Rio de Janeiro. In this region farmers and mill owners impose relations and conditions of work upon employees which increase the intensity and cadence of work. This fact and the provoked division of the workers allow for an increase in the exploitation of them and the violation of several of their rights as workers. In this context the proposed vocational courses appear as a discourse dissociated from the basic questions related to the work and lives of employees; actually they constitute another instrument of subjugation and domination in the hands of farmers and mill owners. The educational question for workers rests upon elaboration and sistematization of knowledge acquired in work and life, a class knowledge that opposes the owners' social class.
