Abstract

This study is concerned with the need of extending the criteria that are applied, sistematically or not, to assess childrens' condition in the preliminary and initial teaching stages of writing and reading. Based on developmental approaches of the process of mastering the written language system, a set of criteria is proposed including: the level of aprehension of the symbolic nature of the written system and of the recording patterns of speech, in recognition and production; the level of aprehension of the phonological dimension as independent from meaning of speech, as well as the analytic ability in relation to this dimension; the level of aprehension of the functions of the written language; and the level of awareness of metalinguistic notions. A set of task-situation was elaborated from those criteria and applied to a group of pre-elementary and first-grade children. The findings were analysed so as to check the appropriateness of the task-situations proposed and to derive orientation and suggestions for utilization of this type of assessment by teachers.
