This article deals with some of the main prospects under which the phenomenon of teaching how to read and write a native language may be studied. These prospects involve the multiple aspects of the phenomenon itself and group them into three categories: a) the definition of "literacy"; b) the nature of this process - psychological, psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and linguistic - and c) the conditioning factors of this process,. that is to say: social, cultural and political pressupositions. The implications of those prospects are pointed out in order to try to solve problems as methodology, use of didactic materials, setting up of the requirements and skills needed by the learner, training of teachers. It defends the necessity of a coherent theory in dealing with the teaching of how to read and write a native language. Such a theory must not only reconcile the results but also interact studies about the aspects of the process in a structured form.
