Abstract

NAGUEL A., José. Alfabetização camponesa: problemas e sugestões. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1985, n.52, pp.51-60. ISSN 0100-1574.

Although the elimination of illiteracy in rural areas supposes global social transformations, positive results can be expected when the extension and betterment of rural elementary education is combined with specific literacy programs. These should be originated from the real and objective interests of the peasants' groups, be inserted in theirculture and work for the strenghening of their power and autonomy. Given the heterogeneity of the peasants' groups, the literacy programs start from different motivations, but they are all related to more global actions of development and change. From the recent Latin American experience valuable suggestions can be obtained both regarding the kinds of programs to be developed and the technical fundaments of the literacy programs. However, all this should be preceded by the political decision of favoring the peasant groups. It should be expected that in our countries there will be favorable conditions for the adoption of this decision.
