This article analyzes different aspects of motherhood, base on research with women from the suburbs and the countryside of the Island of São Luís, Maranhão. Motherhood appears to be more a social than a biological phenomenon, its biological aspects being clearly marked by culture and society. The article emphasizes the importance of desire and denial, questioning the idea that it is accepted by women without conflict. The article also discusses the relationship of motherhood to health and medicine, indicating the difficulties women have with institutional medicine and ilustrating their important contributions to the well-being of their families and communities as well as their contributions to the development of medical knowledge in general.
