Abstract

FIGUEIREDO, Luciano Raposo de Almeida  and  MAGALDI, Ana Maria Bandeira de Mello. Quitandas e quitutes: um estudo sobre rebeldia e transgressão femininas numa sociedade colonial. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1985, n.54, pp.50-61. ISSN 0100-1574.

This study refers to social participation of women in commercial activities in eighteenth century Minas Gerais. By doing commercial dealings such as selling sweets in streets or through work in small shops and groceries, they reconciled hard conditions of life of both slaves and social disqualified people. These women also contributed decisively to establish bonds of solidarity between those groups and to form a basis of association for them. Facing social control measures taken by colonial and metropolitan administrations and helping to reproduce mining economy by an efficient supply of provisions, tradeswomen of the period were at the same time considered as disorder agents and held responsible for the social strain which has characterized the colonial mining society.
