Abstract

RASCHE, Vânia Maria Moreira  and  KUDE, Vera Maria Moreira. Pigmalião na sala de aula: quinze anos sobre as expectativas do professor. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1986, n.57, pp.61-70. ISSN 0100-1574.

The literature review about the development of teacher expectations research in the United States, indicates that in the last seventeen years since the publication of "Pigmalion in the classroom" (Rosenthal e Jacobson, 1968), there has been a tendency to abandon the attempts to replicate it, no longer trying to manipulate teacher expectancies about his/her students but, instead, trying to focus the research in the factors like pupil social class, sex, race, cumulative folder information etc., that cause teacher expectations. This research has great relevance because even if the evidence suggests that in most cases teacher expectancies don't bias pupil performance, it also indicates that teacher expectancies sustain student performance in undesirable levels. In Brazil, the research studies on this topic have come to the same results, mainly emphasizing the relationship between the student failure and low teacher's expectancies.
