This article describes and analyzes the changes in both discourse and practices concerning child care in Brazil during slavery (late 19^th Century), based on texts from the period. It stresses the onset of a discourse on day care centers after slave's liberation, suggesting that advocacy for these institutions had controlling aims and was linkedto the interest in releasing poor females from child care so as to employ them as household servants, as well as to improve male labour force productiveness.
