Abstract
MACHADO, Lia Zanotta. The place of tradition in Latin American modernity: construction of ethnic and gender identity. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1991, n.77, pp.35-46. ISSN 0100-1574.
Taking as empiric reference the statements of a Guatemalan indian feminine leader, the paper examines the process of constructing ethnic and gender identity which shapes a new political and cultural language articulated to western modernity. Neithermere rescue of tradition, nor submission to modernity; neither dissolution of tradition nor refusal of modernity, the new language from the movements that emerged in Latin America in the 70's - particularly indian and women's movements - seem to point to a confront of cultural alterities that promote deconstruction and construction of equality and difference.
