Abstract

For over twenty years in Mexico, leftist current have been able to run - or at least have a strong influence on - several higher education institutions called Autonomous Universities (UAs). The present paper offers a critical evaluation of this experience, along the lines suggested by the three basic meanings assigned to democracy in relation to the university: democratizing the access x academic quality; the issue of the university's "return" to society; and that of participation and representation in the institution's management. It is argued that left administration of the UAs has followed an adaptative pattern, and that, in view of current proposals of change in Mexican higher education, the left should change its practice and its approach to higher education.
