Abstract

BRUSCHINI, Maria Cristina Aranha. Women and work: human resource policies in selected large companies. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1995, n.95, pp.13-24. ISSN 0100-1574.

Based on information obtained in large private companies, the article analyzes human resource policies and social benefits which contribute to reconciling work and the family. The first part presents a diagnostic of women's participation in the Brazilian work force, which has expanded and diversified in recent years, and of changes in the profile of women who work, the majority of them with family responsibilities. The second part analyzes data obtained in visits to three multinacional companies, headquartered in São Paulo and interviews with Human Resources managers, centering on non-compulsory workers': rights and benefits offered in areas such as food, education and transportation. The research, while still exploratory, demonstrates the important participation of the private sector in the implementation of social policies which benefit workers and their families. The article includes a call for women workers to mobilize to argue that gender questions be more fully contemplated in the companies' human resource policies
