Abstract

In this article we discuss how different theoretical framework can provide information about different aspects of the teaching and learning process that happens in the classroom. We shall present the main ideas about teaching and the role of teacher that can be inferred from two theoretical viewpoints: the Piagetian and the Vygotskian theories. To illustrate our presentation, we shall use, whenever is possible, examples from classrooms (age 14-15) in which we have done research to describe the construction, by the students, of atomistic explanations for the physical states of matter.
