Abstract

CHARLOT, Bernard. The relationship to knowledge and schooling among studensts in the periphery. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1996, n.97, pp.47-63. ISSN 0100-1574.

This article compares a study done in a secondary school in the urban periphery with another realized among good students in a school for "more favored" clients. How to simultaneously conceptualize the singularity of schooling histories and the statistical correlation between school failure and social origin? The study concentrates on the meaning of school for students and the fact of learning itself. It tries to identify the processes which structure the schooling history of the youngsters: mobilization in the school in relation to school, and learning processes. It shows that schooling history is never lived in advance, that youngsters from poorer environments think of school more in terms of the future than in relationship to knowledge, and that learning represents no single meaning
