Abstract

PAIVA, Vanilda; JUNQUEIRA, Célia  and  MULS, Leonardo. Priority for basic education and the pauperization of teaching. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1997, n.100, pp.109-120. ISSN 0100-1574.

A study carried out the salaries of teachers working within the municipal schools of the city of Rio de Janeiro during the period from May 1979 to May 1996 and the interviews with teachers, students and parents in that city's public schools demonstrates the contradiction between rhetoric in favor of education, with emphasis on basic education and the impoverishment of elementary school teachers  with implications for the possibility of teachers serving as models for identification to facilitate learning. The reconstitution of the figures for monthly remuneration of these teachers allows us to demonstrate a salary loss which is most severe among teachers with higher levels of schooling and with more experience compared to teachers at beginning of their careers. The dramatic nature of the situation, however, can only be perceived in the daily life of the schools as the citations at the end of the article explain.
