Abstract

CANEN, Ana. Pedagogical competence and cultural diversity: a concern in teacher education?. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1997, n.102, pp.89-107. ISSN 0100-1574.

The present paper discusses the concept of pedagogical competence bearing in mind the preparation of teachers to act in multicultural societies. In this sense, it synthesises the main theoretical approaches concerning this area of research, comparing literature in two multicultural societies (Brazil and the UK) concerning the relevance of the critical, intercultural perspective in the efforts of challenging educational inequality. Is also analyses data from a case study undertaken in a higher education institution supposedly engaged in the perspective discussed. The potentials and limitations in the development of competence in an intercultural perspective are discussed, based on the data obtained.

Keywords : Competência Pedagógica; Educação Multicultural; Perspectiva Intercultural Crítica; Formação de Professores .
