Abstract

MARTINS, Carlos Benedito. Private higher education in the federal district. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1997, n.102, pp.157-186. ISSN 0100-1574.

The text treats private higher education in Brasília from the field perspective. In the countryside universities, private establishments and federations tend to occupy different positions. It points to factors contributing to the expansion of private education: high population growth rates in the Federal District, the concentration of the federal bureaucracy and the lack of night classes in the public university. The main factor is shown to be meeting the growing demand for certification at the university level, with no observation of a greater involvement in research activities. It questions the possible relationship between the growth of local private teaching and a change in public university conduct regarding strategies for meeting the demand for university level teaching.
