Abstract

DIETZSCH, Mary Júlia Martins. Retelling stories: voices and silences of street children. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1998, n.104, pp.122-143. ISSN 0100-1574.

This article is a reflection on the project Lendo na Praça conducted by the Secretaria da Educação do Estado de São Paulo (1996), with boys and girls who live in the streets of São Paulo City, Brazil. With the aim to enable children's access to the written word an old bus was modified, placed in a central square in the city and equipped with books and other writing materials in order to create an space of reading and writing. The day by day events and speechs which occurred inside the bus were registered by five "reading-mediators", specially prepared to follow the boys/girls in their approach to the books and the narrative they construct through the street corners. These registers were discussed and analyzed from a dialogical view of language.
