Abstract

PALLARES-BURKE, Maria Lúcia Garcia. The periodical press as an educational enterprise of the 19th century. Cad. Pesqui. [online]. 1998, n.104, pp.144-161. ISSN 0100-1574.

This article starts out from the idea that much more attention should be paid to the informal agencies of education if one wishes to recover the history of Brazilian education in the 19th century with greater accuracy. Among the various agencies such as novels, newspapers, journals, sermons, theatre, paintings, etc., which might have much to say about the complex way cultures are produced, maintained and transformed, this article has selected the cultural periodical press. In the first place, the article offers a general outline of the characteristics of the Latin-American press, of which the Brazilian press is a part; and, afterwards, it studies a periodical from Recife which played an outstanding educational role on the Brazilian scene during the first part of the 19th century: O Carapuceiro.
