Abstract

The objective of this paper is to provide a general view of Bernstein work and his outstanding contribution to theory and research in the field of Sociology of Education. It is also highlighted some misunderstandings of his concepts and theoretical orientation. In this way the article is divided in three different sections. The first one tries to show how Bernstein's work is analysed in the academic field. The second part explores how this author developed his theories according to his own perspective. The third part turns to the analysis of his work, based on an extensive literature that has been produced about his contributions to the field of education.
