This paper discusses the results of a study aimed at understanding the process of development of the visual aesthetics of pupils, following their systematic exposure to reading activities and aesthetic discussions in the 8 grades of basic education in the same class, in an longitudinal study. It compares the aesthetic understanding of the students in the experimental group with that of the students in the control group, presenting excerpts of the dialog that took place regarding the art works and images. The article defends the introduction of aesthetic discussions in the classroom, starting at the first grades, respecting and valuing the ideas and intuitive theories of students, criticising current image reading approaches, usually formalistic.
